Highlights
A few days to explore the waters around Rio from the decks of a tall ship is a chance not to be missed. Just 100 miles south of the city - an overnight sail away - is the Bay of Ilha Grande, which has been dubbed the "Caribbean of Brazil". It is an area of tremendous diversity. There are tropical jungles, replete with howling monkeys that suggest the interior regions of the Amazon; parts of Ilha Grande and segments of the mainland coast make up the most intact Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Rainforest) left in the world. Adjoining these canopies are beautiful, white beaches bordered by crystal clear waters, where colourful fish swim in tremendous schools. On the mainland are interesting villages to explore.
It is an area well suited to cruising on a sailing ship - you can anchor in quiet places with the bay all to yourself and then find an interesting place to go ashore and explore.
And you could also take this opportunity to explore Rio - the host city of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2016.
