Left the calm of the mother bank fueled by Chef Dave’s enormous fry ups and cakes. After a bit of training with Lesley, we are sweating and tailing like pro’s to make the yards swing round (bracing).

LN797 Day One: Yesterday saw a windy start to the day with the fenders between the starboard side of the ship and the quayside having disturbed a few people during the night. Others were disturbed by the slap of waves around the stern.

Lord Nelson Celebrates
Lord Nelson has had a busy week. We finished the voyage on the 16th Of October and came alongside in Southampton with Tenacious mooring astern of us. All the voyage crew and permanent crew congregated on the shore side for the presentation of the Jubilee Sailing Trust “Battle of the Barques” Trophy.

Day 6
Forward starboard came on watch at 08.00 to find that during the night the crew, including cooks and engineers, had tacked ship, wore ship, braced yards and tweaked every sail to get around several way points. At that time we were well ahead of ‘the other ship’. At about 09.00 the enemy was spotted on the horizon just off Cowes.

Day 4 We motored towards France, triumphant following our lead in the first leg of the race, and relieved that a calmer sea would allow us to enjoy a good night’s sleep. The crew awoke to see the lights of a waking Cherbourg.

Forward Starboard were on 8pm till midnight watch and were kept on duty to help hand the Main Course. We finally got to bed about 1am. After a brief morning meeting we tacked the ship with all hands on deck followed by a talk from the Captain on what we had done and why.

Lord Nelson got off to a blistering start to Leg 1 of the race with virtually all canvas set as we crossed the start line in style. The race was started by cannon from the Royal Yacht Squadron and this was the first time that the two ships had raced each other.

A busy day starting with, bracing practice and sail training in the morning. After an early lunch, we weighed anchor and set off towards the Needles, so that we could then turn, set all the sails and speed across the start line on time.

It’s Thursday morning and good progress is being made aboard Lord Nelson. The repaired Fore T’Gallant was sent up and bent on before the wind increased and the weather deteriorated.

Motoring overnight down and across the channel manoeuvring to avoid shipping lanes and unpredictable fishing craft. Many of us seeing the Milky way for the first time in years---and a couple of shooting stars, what a night to behold only to be followed by a magnificent sunrise.

Joined Tenacious in London yesterday - surprisingly barely 24hours ago! We were warmly welcomed and instructed in all sorts of things which we promptly forgot. Strangely enough though, we've had no problems finding the Mess, Bar and continuous tea, coffee and Graham's legendary biscuits.
