13/01/13 - Lord Nelson
Dated: 13/01/2013
At present we're motor sailing with three staysails set, and are hoping to set more sails very soon. The Atlantic wildlife had greeted us already, with a whale sighting this morning and dolphins around lunchtime. Underneath us, there is 3km of water and we look forward to crossing the mid-atlantic ridge. Since yesterday we have been rolling rather, courtesy of a recent low pressure system. This has led to a few green gills and more amusingly, to the necessity of 'sailor strainers'. This is a large green net that is rigged above the hand rail to prevent vomiters taking an unexpected dive on the deeper rolls. I have not quite worked out how one is sick between the gaps though. I suppose a bag maybe appropriate.
Spirits are lifting as we are at sea at last. With no ships or land in sight, we have commenced the adventure we have long been planning for. Here's hoping we can raise some square sails tomorrow and travel in the method Lord Nelson intended. Aft Starboard (Bryan, Sophie, Seb, Dom & Gareth)
