Aft Port are once again on the afternoon watch, under Mike’s benevolent dictatorship. After two days of motoring into adverse (but not strong) winds, we have reached a point in the Bay of Biscay where we can turn towards the north, with a now easterly wind allowing us to set sails and turn off those […]

The wind is picking up and we look forward to hoisting sails later today. The cool north wind has a bite to it. Whales spotted off the port created excitement for all on deck. We have been spotting ships around, and a large amount of wood planking drifting by – estimating that the wood washed […]

Well, all I can say is that the permanent crew are just as thoughtful as my watch leader. Tom, our Bosun, obviously noticed that I was missing my gym programmes (how, I wonder??) and kindly took the power off the steering, meaning the wheel was harder to pull round, and needed pulling further round, for […]

I woke up after an amazing sleep, being on watch the night before took its toll. Today the game “Murder” was announced as game on and it wasn’t long before people started to fall like flies! Lunch came and we were called to first sitting in the upper mess. I knew something was not right […]

Conventional times and dates have gone by the board, our time is measured in such things as our next scheduled watch, and the essential …time of the next meal. But today it is Aft Port Watches’ turn to write the blog, and to maintain the promise I made to Annette, thoughts have turned to the […]

Our third day at sea, a fabulous day, one of the best ! Marvellous, marvellous lunch – thanks to galley crew again. Setting sails this morning as the wind spiralled off the aft quarter through the square rig. My watch leader Graham, aware that I am not doing my gym exercises, is showing immense support […]

This is our second day at sea, we are now 200nm from land and heading North East. We have seen 2 turtles and some dolphins and the man overboard exercise was completed yesterday – Fred the mannequin was saved from the sea! Winds are now force 3 Southerly  so we will set sails this afternoon. […]

Voyage TNS637 has left the harbour at Porta Delgada, San Miguel. The sun is shining, the sea is calm, crew in good spirits, just need the right wind now so that we can put some sails up and turn off the engine! Next stop Milton Haven, Wales (or possibly France….)

After a hearty breakfast of sausages, maple syrup and pancakes we set sail for Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. We could have had flying fish for breakfast because one landed on the deck last night. It was over a foot long with lovely long fins but Ed threw it back, and it swam away fine, to […]

We left the beautiful island of Faial in sunshine, and 10 or so Common Dolphins swam over to bid us farewell, playing at the bow. We are now gently sailing to anchor off the island of Pico and have had Al fresco lunch on deck so as not to miss any opportunity for further sightings.

Whales, Whales, Whales !! We arrived at Horta (good reverse manoeuvring by Captain Barbara!) in time for a mad dash to the infamous Pete’s Bar for lunch (wheelchairs are tricky on the cobbles but helped by a chariot rope system up the slopes!) sardines chips and vino Verde. A catamaran and a fast rib took […]

Yesterday we saw some Atlantic Spotted Dolphins! And early this morning we had a few Common Dolphin come through in small groups, and also some, either Atlantic Spotted, or Atlantic Striped Dolphin. Then at 10.30 to our great excitement three Sperm Whales passed very close to the ship!! They crossed the bow about six feet […]
