Figurehead Sculptor Makes a Generous Donation

Author: Jubilee Sailing Trust, Dated: 07/01/2010

This year’s London Boat Show will showcase a very special talent when Glyn Foulkes, a Hamble based painter and sculptor, takes his place on the Classic Boat stand.

This year, Glyn, who is a recognised figure head sculptor will be continuing major work on a brand new figure head of Lord Nelson, which he will donate to Southampton based charity, Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), upon its completion.

The Trust owns and operates two very special tall ships, both of which are the only of their kind in the world. The ships are adapted to enable able bodied and disabled people with all ranges of sailing experience to take on the responsibility of crewing the ships’ in destinations around the world.

Glyn became involved with Jubilee Sailing Trust over thirty years ago, when he donated pieces of his work to JST for fundraising purposes. The piece that he will be working on though has a very special purpose – as this figurehead is designed with Jubilee Sailing Trust’s first tall ship, Lord Nelson, in mind.

“Although the figurehead cannot be used on board Lord Nelson due to the special design of the bow sprit [to enable wheelchair users and all other crew members to have the Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio ‘Titanic’ experience] it is fitting that such a monumental piece of art is created for a ship that is so significant.” Says Glyn when asked why he’d chosen to produce the piece for Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Sarah Staines, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Jubilee Sailing Trust explains, “As a small to medium charity that receives no Government funding we depend on the generosity of supporters like Glyn who truly believe in the mission that we aim to achieve. We will be able to use the figurehead at exhibitions like the London Boat Show as a representation of how grand our ships are and we’re enormously grateful to Glyn for his contribution.”
