Keen to help out?
Why not join our maintenance teams?
Both Lord Nelson and Tenacious have regular maintenance periods and we are always looking for people who are willing to help. Enthusiasm is the main requirement and as long as you are willing to lend a hand, then there is a job for you!
We are also looking for people with specialist skills such as engineers, carpenters or electricians.
All volunteers are provided with accommodation on board and have three hearty meals a day, so spending money can be reserved for a drink at the bar on board or in port!
Maintenance can be carried out in various ports around the country or abroad; here are the dates for this season :

The fund raising team have done a great job and a sizable chunk (technical financial term!) of money has been set aside for the second phase of Lord Nelson's refit.
Once again we really need volunteers to come along and help throughout the winter for the various jobs that we'll need to get done to keep Lord Nelson going for another 20 years. The skills that we require will change depending on which phase the work is in.
Lord Nelson will be based in Southampton for the duration of the maintenance period. Work will commence on 7th November 2009 and will continue until the 30th March 2010. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate wheelchair users during the maintenance period due to the lack of accessibility. I can assure you though that in the long run the work we’re doing is vital to ensure that we continue to sail with a completely mixed crew.
The main priority jobs to be completed are:
Replacement of bridge deck
Replace Main Engines
Replace the Generators
Removal and inspection of masts
Refit and Refurbish Remaining Heads/Showers - This work will continue from phase one
Redesign Fo’c’sle accommodation
Refurbish disabled cabins, lower mess and bar area
Replace Wheelchair Lifts
Replace Portable Emergency Fire Pump
As with all our maintenance periods, the job list is never ending, so there will be lots of other work to be done as our priorities allow.
The skills that will be most in demand will be:
Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Engineers, Riggers
We are also looking for lots of keen people who can put their hand to various other tasks.
During the last couple of weeks of the refit in March 2010, we’ll need to form the “Clean Up All The Mess Gang”, so folk keen with a mop, bucket and duster will all be very welcome during this final stage.
We will be trying to book volunteers on to the ship with specific jobs in mind to ensure the priority work gets completed.
Conditions on board will not be the usual 5 star accommodation that Nellie regulars will be used to, due to the work required, so be prepared to ‘rough it’ a bit. At least once the work is finished it’ll be six star.
If you have any of the skills above and would like to help us out please contact one of the team in Ship Operations Department on 023 8044 3113 or email operations@jst.org.uk
With many thanks in advance and see you all in Sunny Southampton
Mark Drew
