Many of Tenacious' sails are furling sails, that is they roll away when not in use, helping make the ship more friendly to our disabled crew members. There is a need to replace this equipment as it tires and wears out.

Exhaust Spray Head

The main machinery (engines and generators) have a water cooled exhaust silencer system and this head injects cooling water at the appropriate point. These tend to corrode due to the corrosive nature of hot gases and salt water when mixed!

In dry dock 2020 Tenacious was fitted with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System. The Officers of the Watch (OOWs) would benefit from some software upgrades allowing more flexible use of the system as fitted.

The firefighting teams are required to carry radios to allow the team members to communicate with each other as well as the command and control teams. This would be improved with the addition of microphones that pick up the voice from vibrations within the skull and hence avoiding the issues of shouting into a handheld radio through a breathing apparatus mask!

Sailing a square rigged ship inevitably involves "going aloft" - that is climbing the masts. Indeed, we encourage as many of our crew to be involved as possible. Safely doing this requires harnesses and equipment to safely stop or "arrest" any fall.

In the event of having to evacuate or abandon ship, Tenacious has to have the capability to safely disembark our disabled crew. There is a need to maintain and improve the crane arms that are installed for this eventuality.

Tenacious carries a RIB, a Rigid Inflatable Boat, which is used in a variety of roles including Man Overboard recovery, crew transport and ship manoeuvering.

In addition to the RIB, a separate inflatable boat is carried for additional crew transport and to comply with safety regulations. Both boats require cranes, or davits, to lift them off the ship and into the water.
