A Dorset musician’s theatre production honouring Weymouth, both here and across the pond, is to be showcased next month to raise vital funds for the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST).

Singer-songwriter John West from Weymouth wrote the musical ‘Trusting in the Waves – From Old England to New England,’ which commemorates major historical milestones for both Weymouth, Dorset, and Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Self-penned during lockdown, West’s one-off concert will be at the Pavilion Theatre in Weymouth on Monday 13th June.

Audiences will be treated to a unique musical and visual production celebrating 400 years since Weymouth, MA was founded as well as the 450th anniversary of Melcombe Regis joining with ‘old’ Weymouth, to form the present-day town.

The charity concert will tell the story of the Little Ship that sailed out of Weymouth Harbour to found the town of Weymouth in New England.

And, with half the proceeds from ticket sales going to Southampton-based global sailing charity JST, a sailing charity which transforms lives at sea, it couldn’t be more fitting.

The JST has a mission to give people of mixed abilities and circumstances the freedom to explore their ability, potential and place in the world through adventures at sea aboard its tall ship, Tenacious, and CEO Patrick Fleming, is thrilled to hear that the Weymouth-inspired musical will be raising vital funds for the sailing charity.

He said: “This is a great story that John has put to music for people across Dorset and it’s wonderful to hear that all the money gained from ticket sales will be shared between us and the Weymouth Tudor House Museum. This comes at a particularly good time for the JST as we are currently in the middle of an emergency campaign to keep our charity afloat.

“We’ve had incredible support so far, and this charity concert, will be an incredible help.”

Acclaimed folk musician Mr West said that it was during lockdown when he had the opportunity to research and develop material for the show.

He said: “During the pandemic, I was given the perfect opportunity to put together this show in the downtime I had in lockdown.

“Weymouth in Massachusetts got its name from the one hundred or so migrants who sailed from Weymouth Harbour here in Dorset to find a new beginning on the East Coast of America.

“It is a fascinating story, and I will be bringing it to life through words and original music.

“Supporting the JST seemed very appropriate as it shows how experiences at sea can help strengthen our resolve to overcome challenges in all our lives.”

‘Trusting in the Waves – From Old England to New England’ makes its debut at Weymouth Pavilion in June, and John is set to perform in Weymouth Massachusetts later in the year.

The JST charity offers people of all abilities the opportunity to climb aboard its tall ship Tenacious for an immersive sailing experience and relies on funding from the public. Since its founding in 1978 the Jubilee Sailing Trust has welcomed more than 50,000 people on board.

The charity is currently appealing to its supporters so it can raise £1.2 million by the end of September 2022 so it can continue to fund existing ship and shore operational activities.
