The Southampton based charity the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) has been selected as one of the 7 finalists, out of 750 entries in The National Lottery Awards, in the sports category.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust brings together men and women of all physical abilities, through the adventure and challenge of sailing aboard two very special tall ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious. Crew members are taught vital sailing skills during the voyages as well as important life skills.

The National Lottery Sports Award finalists’ projects include building new sports venues, and inspiring future generations to participate in sport. Lottery funding is helping to grow sport across the UK with new facilities and coaching that are helping communities to stay healthy, fit and active.

Over £6 million of National Lottery funding has helped the JST to widen its impact. Funding was invested in a purpose-built tall ship called Tenacious following the popularity of its first ship, the Lord Nelson – the only two ships in the world that are accessible to all physical abilities. 11,600 people have sailed on Tenacious since its first voyage in September 2000 – 1,300 have been wheelchair users and 4,500 have had a physical disability.

Both Lord Nelson and Tenacious were purpose-designed to combine traditional square-rigs with special features that make it possible for physically disabled people, including wheelchair users, to take a full and active role in crewing the ship. The special facilities on board ensure that everybody has the opportunity to participate in all aspects of tall ship sailing. Among the bespoke features are:

• Hearing loops
• Wheelchair lifts between decks
• Integrated Braille instructions
• A joy stick for people who want to steer the ship but cannot hold a wheel
• An audio compass for those who want to steer but cannot see.

As well as building people’s confidence in working as part of a team, JST improves employment opportunities by teaching other life skills. The experience also breaks down barriers around disability by encouraging crew members to help challenge other people’s views and approaches to disability. This provides a lasting impact that stays with our sailors long after they have completed their voyage, and spreads to others in their own communities.
