Day 11

Lord Nelson made her regal way into Port Lochroy yesterday arriving to snow and mist. A few snowballs may have been thrown. We were delighted to welcome on board the hardy souls who run Port Lochroy post office, museum run by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust. After lunch they spoke to us about the history of the area, protocols for going ashore and a bit about their lives over summer in the bay. Then it was dotiboats to the ready and rides to the shore to send post cards and meet some more penguins.

The island is only a quarter of an acre and with so many penguins it made conditions underfoot challenging! The Bosun’s Mates, Permanent Crew and able bodied voyage crew once again did a fantastic job of helping voyage crew with mobility difficulties land ashore and enjoy the sights. They’ve really been incredible at safely getting everyone ashore and always with a smile and a joke.

Today we are sheltering from some inclement weather in the lee of Wienke Island.

FORWARD STARBOARD WATCH- JC, NICK, ALAN, SUE, VINNY, ANGELA, LIZ, PETER AND KATE.
