“It all looks positive – we are itching to get going on the project to get our Tenacious back in service”.

Luke is the JST’s Technical Manager and with just a couple of weeks until Tenacious’ Special Survey and Refit period, he’s found time to update us on what’s happening.

As we speed towards the end of August, we are set to get underway with Tenacious’ Refit and Special Survey.

We have an ‘advance party’ of crew attending the ship for day work from next week (w/c 24th August). We’ll be getting the systems up and running, allowing us to live and carry out our work on board when the rest of the crew arrive on 1st September.

Since my last update, we have mapped out the maintenance period and several of the main projects within it. A bit like getting the edgings done on the puzzle and several significant features. There are several stages: from the initial period in Barry, moving over to Sharpness, removal of gear, dry docking, flooding up and progressing into general maintenance and sea trails, before getting ready to start the sailing season.

Our bigger projects are underway. New main engines and main generators have been ordered. The new eShips alarm system and also the upgrade in the ship’s fire alarm system is in progress. Wire rigging to renew Tenacious’ standing rigging over the next three maintenance periods (stretching to October 2021) is also underway with 33 wires being replaced in the next two months. Stores have been ordered, and today I received the bearings from Duwel which will replace the old ones when the propeller shafts are taken out.

We have visited Sharpness shipyard to scope out the workspace and meet with the guys there. All looks positive and both parties are itching to get going on the project to get our Tenacious back in service.

I know the Permanent Crew are jumping at every opportunity to help out to get stuff ready and like all of us, are really looking forward to getting back on board very shortly.

The same goes for our fantastic volunteers. We have had a brilliant response, thank you very much, it is very much appreciated especially in these interesting times. We are nearly there with our Covid policy which will see us manage everyone on board safely during the maintenance and into the sailing season.

Please keep the questions and ideas coming, along with the offers of assisting and I’ll make sure I keep you all posted as we get underway with the coming project. You can contact me at luke.galuszewski@jst.org.uk and watch this space for more updates.
