This was a close collaboration in developing the appropriate programme and voyage structure to suit the needs of a group of veterans. The group was composed by the talented staff at Mates4Mates who understand the challenges these veterans live with. The crew was structured to include family and support workers, who could offer a constellation of care around the veterans — along with a dedicated psychological counsellor on board who was familiar with the participants. The vessel provided places of privacy and peace, as well as areas of teamwork and intense collaboration — offering the group the chance to build health through the voyage experience. Veterans with PTSD often experience high stress during idle periods. Aboard the JST’s purpose-built ships, these veterans benefitted from the camaraderie of the crew and the challenging environment to find peace even in these idle moments.
