The Orpheus Centre Trust
Orpheus Centre is an independent specialist college in Surrey that specialises in performing and visual arts and makes dramatic improvements to young disabled adults’ lives. The Centre was founded by Sir Richard Stilgoe, the British songwriter, lyricist and musician, best known for his humorous songs, frequent television appearances and his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Peter Skellern.
In July 2018, we undertook a bold new initiative between our two organisations. During a 5 day voyage along the South Coast facilitated by Sir Richard, the crew (including students of the Orpheus Centre, their assistants, skilled tutors, and other disabled young adults) wrote and rehearsed a musical spectacular which was performed upon arrival in Portsmouth as the centrepiece of an in-port event celebrating diversity, creativity and ability, and breaking down barriers between disabled and non-disabled people
