Many of us will want to see 2020 out in a memorable way, and we can’t think of a better place to do just that.
We’ll enjoy New Year celebrations on board with sixteen bells at midnight. This is an old seafaring tradition; eight bells from the oldest onboard to say goodbye to the old year and eight bells from the youngest to welcome in the new year.
Expect a family-feeling on this voyage and the possibility of meeting other ships at New Year and watching the fireworks. Let us take care of your plans and make sure you see in 2021 in a truly memorable way.
What’s more, the Canaries is an incredible sailing playground with beautiful views of Islands relatively close to each other and quieter backwater to enjoy.
Captain Simon says: “It’s seeing our voyage crew come together, friendships form and people forgetting their daily challenges – that’s what makes it for me. What a great way to mark the new year.”
What to expect
As one of our voyage crew, you need to arrive with a sense of adventure (don’t expect to be lying on deck catching rays all week). Everyone is expected to get involved and join in as part of their Watch duties.
And the trade-off will be worth it. We see Voyage Crew build resilience and confidence, and come away with a new-found sense of self-belief. They often describe their experience as life-changing.
Sailing on Tenacious
Don’t worry if you’ve never sailed before – most people step on board with no experience of sailing a tall ship.
You’ll be part of our Voyage Crew, and be put into one of four teams called Watches. You’ll learn from our Permanent Crew and will take part in all the tasks necessary to operate the Ship, whether that’s setting sail, helming (steering) the Ship, assisting in the Galley or climbing the mast – though that one’s not compulsory!
And you’ll enjoy time off watch every day to take in the scenery, get to know others on board and take part in the activities we have planned. Our beautiful tall ship Tenacious becomes your home for the duration of your voyage – we want you to be comfortable and enjoy the experience of being on board.
*What you pay
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we are able to subsidise all our voyage places. If you can, please consider making a donation or fundraising towards the full cost of your voyage. This means we can continue to offer this subsidy to those who are less able to afford our adventures.
Why sail with the JST?
Our voyages are not just boat rides in amazing settings. JST sailing adventures are about giving people the freedom to explore their ability, potential and place in the world.
Life on board is about joining in and getting involved. Everyone is seen and treated as equal. Everyone has a role to play and contributes to the best of their ability.
It’s in this unique environment that we see daily challenges fade into the background.
As Mike says: “I saw a young man’s life being changed for the better, because of his experience on board. His mindset, and the mindset of his parents too, had totally re-set. It’s just one story of many – the JST does change lives.”
