Set sail from Lisbon as part of the Tall Ships Races 2020.
The Tall Ships Races are an annual event in European waters which sees a spectacular collection of sailing vessels from across the globe gather for several weeks of exciting racing and festivals. Our voyage crew spend time in port during the Tall Ship festivals at both the beginning and the end of each voyage, which may be up to three days in total. As part of the team, you’ll be expected to help host when Tenacious is open to visitors.
Starting in Portuguese capital of Lisbon, you will leave port with a global fleet of tall ships. You’ll then race North towards La Coruna in Northern Spain, and be welcomed into this bustling port in spectacular style.
As with all our voyages, everyone on board has a role to play as part of a Watch. Without our voyage crew, we can’t sail. So if you’re looking for luxury and want to simply lie on deck and catch some rays, then this is not for you.
But if you’re up for experiencing a unique camaraderie and want to be part of an incredible team then read on. We promise you’ll leave the ship with a sense of achievement at what you’ve experienced and a fresh perspective on your (and others’) ability.
Captain Darren says: “The crew love being part of the Tall Ships Race. You get to sail in company with other tall ships and appreciate the sight of a fleet racing under sail at sea. Our voyage crew come from all backgrounds and form a unique team too.”
What to expect
Sailing on Tenacious
Don’t worry if you’ve never sailed before – most people step on board with no experience of sailing a tall ship.
You’ll be part of our Voyage Crew, and be put into one of four teams called Watches. You’ll learn from our Permanent Crew and will be given opportunities to help on all aspects of ship life, whether it’s climbing the mast or unfurling the sails through to helping on deck and in the galley.
And you’ll enjoy time off watch every day to take in the scenery, get to know others on board and take part in the activities we have planned. Our beautiful tall ship Tenacious becomes your home for the duration of your voyage – we want you to be comfortable and enjoy the experience of being on board.

What you pay *
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we are able to subsidise all our voyage places, meaning you pay the ‘subsidised contribution’. If you can, please consider making a donation or fundraising towards the full cost of your voyage. This means we can continue to offer bursaries for those who are less able to afford our adventures.
Why sail with the JST?
Our voyages are not just boat rides in amazing settings. JST sailing adventures are about giving people the freedom to explore their ability, potential and place in the world.
It’s an experience that liberates people facing challenge in their life – whether they are disabled, dealing with health issues or are experiencing social isolation or disadvantage.
Life on board is about joining in and getting involved. Everyone is seen and treated as equal. Everyone has a role to play and contributes to the best of their ability.
It’s in this unique environment that we see people’s daily challenges fade into the background.
As Anjelica says:
“I joined a voyage when I was 16 and have since sailed about ten times with JST. The charity is such a big part of my life that I use up most of my annual leave so I can keep coming back.”
